24-72 INSPIRE: Innovative SABR for Prostate cancer all Ireland

A Phase II clinical trial investigating a next-generation approach to delivering prostate radiotherapy in just five sessions, while aiming to minimise bladder, bowel and sexual side effects.

People aged 18 or older who were diagnosed prostate cancer which has not spread beyond the prostate gland.

  • This is a study for patients with prostate cancer. The standard treatment options are surgery or radiotherapy, and this may be combined with hormone therapy called androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). These treatments are highly effective in controlling cancer but can cause significant side-effects.
  • Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR) is a type of precise, high dose radiotherapy that delivers treatment over a short course or schedule (typically 5 days).
  • This study uses a novel form of SABR to boost the radiation dose to the part of the prostate containing the dominant tumour rather than delivering a high dose to the whole prostate gland.
  • The INSPIRE study is trying to reduce the side effects that patients may experience, by using methods to reduce radiation dose to their healthy organs, while maintaining the high cancer cure rates.
